Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions you may be asking yourself, as you
make decisions about changing your windows. Your installer or contractor
will have the answers to most of your questions.
- What does it mean when I have fogging in my windows?
It means that there is moisture between the panes and it is cold enough to allow that moisture to condensate. The reason for the moisture may be that the sealed unit has failed, or that you are experiencing extraordinarily cold conditions. If fogging occurs very shortly after the sealed unit is manufactured, it will disappear in a week or less.
- Will I lose glass area when I change my windows?
You may do so, depending on the way in which the window is installed.
Discuss this question with your contractor.
- Does Low-E have a tint?
No, the type of Low-E coating used by Arcor does not have a tint.
Some firms do use tinted coating - check with your installer.
- Does argon gas stay inside the glass?
The argon gas is inside the sealed unit. If the sealed unit is
made properly, the rate of leakage
will be extremely small, to
the point where it does not affect the thermal properties of the
unit.
- Can I get different colours in vinyl?
Yes. Arcor offers brown and ivory out in the Marquis line, and tan in
and out in the Regal line. We also offer pre-painted vinyl windows, in
7 different colours, for both the regal and Marquis line of windows.
Check out our colour section for details, or talk to your installer/contractor.
- What is the most air tight window?
A non-operating (fixed) window is the most air-tight window you can
have.
If you want operating windows, then choose casements and awnings
for air-tightness.
Double hung and sliders are the least air-tight.
- What do I use to clean the vinyl and glass in your windows?
To clean vinyl, warm soapy water is all you need.
For the glass, keep using your regular glass cleaner.
- How much money will I save on fuel bills if I purchase energy efficient windows?
We estimate that Arcor's E.R.PlusT system will save 250 barrels of oil over the life of the window, which translates into savings you will notice on your annual fuel bill.
- Will my wood trim be affected during installation?
We estimate that Arcor's E.R.PlusT system will save 250 barrels of oil over the life of the window, which translates into savings you will notice on your annual fuel bill.
- How long does it take to replace my windows?
The actual hole in the wall exists for just a few minutes. Refinishing the inside and outside trim generally takes a few hours per window, depending on the number of installers working on your job.
- Do bay windows cost a lot more?
Bay windows are more expensive. Depending on the size and finish, they
can cost as much as double or triple the price of flat windows. If you
are contemplating the installation of a bay window, you will have to
weigh this extra cost against the major gains in terms of light and the
appearance of your home, both inside and out.
- How do I get rid of condensation?
If you are experiencing condensation, it is a sign of excessive moisture.
The best way to get rid of condensation is to reduce the amount of moisture
being created,
or to allow some air changes to take place, by opening
doors, etc.
